2022 Membrane Protein Biochemistry and Biophysics Co-Op

  • Full time
  • USA - New Jersey - Kenilworth

Hiring company: Merck

Job Description

As a science-based healthcare company with a longstanding commitment to inventing and providing important medicines and vaccines, subject to applicable law, we require all U.S. and Puerto Rico based employees to be fully vaccinated for COVID-19, unless they have an approved medical or religious exemption or accommodation. We are committed to supporting our employees during this process as we work to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

The Future Talent Program features Cooperative (Co-op) education that lasts up to 6 months and will include one or more projects.  These opportunities in our Research Division can provide you with great development and a chance to see if we are the right company for your long-term goals.

The department of Mass Spectroscopy and Biophysics is offering a co-op to explore novel detergent-free solubilization strategies of membrane proteins.  Research will be focused on understanding the physical properties of membrane-protein containing nanoparticles with emphasis on interfacing emerging technologies in this space with established biochemical and biophysical assays commonly employed in drug discovery.  The candidate will learn how to incorporate membrane proteins into Nanodiscs and/or other solubilization platforms and will characterize ligand/protein and protein/protein interactions by surface plasmon resonance, fluorescence spectroscopy, thermal shift (nDSF/TdF), and other biophysical techniques.  They will employ protein engineering strategies and explore the impact of differing membrane protein solubilization conditions to optimize readout in biophysical and enzymatic assays.

The ideal candidate will work collaboratively and communicate effectively to provide and interrogate testable hypotheses with sufficient impact to warrant publication in a peer-reviewed journal.

**Please note when applying for this position, if the applicant is selected for an interview, he/she must be prepared to submit letters of recommendation, a brief research statement, and a copy of his/her transcript.
