Our company’s Process Research and Development organization is responsible for the development of upstream and downstream processes supporting both clinical and commercial process development for the biologics pipeline. Due to the breadth of responsibilities for Biologics Process Research and Development, collaboration across divisions including discovery, commercialization, and with external partners is required. The Next-Gen Platform Development group within Process Research and Development in Kenilworth, New Jersey is seeking a motivated and experienced downstream Scientist to join our team to support internal technology initiatives for both our current diverse pipeline and next-generation bioprocessing initiatives within our Research and Development Division.
As a Senior Scientist in our Process Research and Development Division in Kenilworth, New Jersey, you will work with a highly collaborative team of Scientists and Engineers to design and develop downstream purification processes in support of early- to late-stage biological products (therapeutic proteins). The scope and activities include designing and optimizing downstream unit operations such as chromatography and tangential flow filtration to optimize step yield and separation performance for intensified/continuous bioprocesses. Careful documentation of results in an Electronic Lab Notebook and strong communication skills both verbal and presentation of data is required.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Contribute to the development of next generation protein manufacturing and process development platforms.
Develop and characterize robust clinical downstream processes capable of delivering multi-kilogram quantities of drug substance.
Independently design and conduct experiments for individual downstream unit operations using relevant operational parameters and analytical inputs.
Integrate unit operations both physically and with relevant process control and monitoring platforms for concurrent operations.
Collaborate with upstream process development, process analytics, and other functional teams in both Research & Development and Manufacturing to advance biologics pipeline.
Conduct laboratory-scale and/or pilot-scale studies to support scale-up and tech transfer of processes.
Serve as Subject Matter Expert for intensified/continuous bioprocessing.
Contribute to a safe and compliant laboratory work environment.
Education Minimum Requirement:
MS with three years of experience or a new PhD in chemical engineering, biological sciences, microbiology, or related field.
Required Experience and Skills:
Scientific understanding of the engineering principles for recombinant protein purification unit operations.
Proven ability to design and execute protein purification experiments independently.
Experience with aseptic technique, protein biophysical properties, and general protein laboratory practices.
Experience with statistical data analysis tools such as design of experiment and multivariate data analysis.
Strong passion and commitment to integrate science to biologic process development.
Preferred Experience and Skills:
Experience with high throughput experimentation using automation platforms such as TECAN.
Experience using and/or programming process control systems such as DeltaV and PCS 7.
Experience with multi-column chromatography systems (BioSMB, PCC, or similar).
Experience with multivariate data analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence would be welcomed skillsets.
